News Release: New Public Library for Aventura

City of Aventura Moves Forward On Plans For New Public Library

The City’s public library, located at 2930 Aventura Blvd, had its roof severely damaged in 2005 by Hurricane Wilma and had to be closed down.  In recent months, the building was demolished to make way for a new library.City of Aventura - Public Library

The new library will have the following features:

  • 26,000 square feet
  • ability to hold approximately 30,000 books & materials
  • designated children’s area
  • designated area for young adults
  • designated area for adults
  • multipurpose room with 100-seat capacity
  • 2 courtyards, one of which will feature a Zen garden
  • an Arboretum
    • offering how-to instructions how to create private gardens
    • a retention pond featuring native aquatic plants

The building will incorporate eco-friendly design and will have Silver LEED Certification, according to the planners.

Construction is scheduled to start in late 2010, and doors are scheduled to be open to the public in 2012.  The estimated cost for the  new library is $15 million.

City of Aventura Supports National “Stop On Red” WeekNational "Stop on Red" Week

National “Stop on Red” Week runs from 8/2/09 – 8/8/09.   The City of Aventura supports this campaign and is committed to preventing accidents caused by running red lights which is one of the leading causes of traffic crashes.  Aventura encourages all drivers to promote a safe driving environment.

National “Stop on Red” Week was created by the Federal Highway Administration in 1995 with a goal to educate the public of the dangers of running red lights and to promote safe driving habits.  In recent studies by the Federal Highway Administration, 97% of drivers feel that other drivers running red lights are a major safety threat, and 1 in 3 people claim they personally know someone injured or killed in a red light running crash.

YouTube Wedding Dance Video Rocks

JK Wedding Entrance Dance

Recently a couple named Jill and Kevin published a YouTube video of their wedding ceremony entrance.  The video called JK Wedding Entrance shows the couple, along with their friends and family, dancing down the aisle of the church to the music of Chris Brown’s “Forever.” Many of you have seen it, but if you haven’t, the video is just fun to watch.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Aventura Launches Electronic NewsletterCity of Aventura framed

City of Aventura publishes a print edition newsletter that is mailed out directly to homes called Aventura Update.  The newsletter represents the City Commission’s commitment to keep the community updated on important issues.  In the spirit of Aventura’s Go Green initiative, an electronic version of the newsletter is now available on the City’s website. This new online edition helps reduce the amount of paper used for City communications and saves money while increasing the availability of news and information for residents, businesses and visitors.

Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Water and Sewer Systems

Construction of the water and sewer systems adjacent to the eastern terminus of NE 188 St and the Community Recreation Center began on July 13, 2009 and is scheduled for completion by August 3, 2009.  Vehicular traffic will be delineated through the construction areas to allow for through traffic in both directions at all times.  Please use caution while accessing the area.

“FEED” Bag Event at Whole Foods in Aventura

FEED Projects was started in 2006 when Lauren Bush designed a bag to benefit the United Nations World Food Program’s (WFP) School Feeding operations.  She created the FEED 1 bag, a reversible burlap and cotton bag stamped with the “FEED the children of the world” and the number “1” to signify that each bag feeds one child in school for one year.  At the United Nations, Lauren met then WFP Communications Officer Ellen Gustafson and they came up with a plan to use FEED bags to FEED the world.  In 2007, Lauren and Ellen founded FEED Projects, LLC and started selling FEED 1 bags in April of 2007.  In 2008, FEED Projects various partnerships will lead to over $4 million for WFP school feeding.

FEED 100 bagOn Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 12:oo pm – 3:00 pm at the Whole Foods in Aventura you can purchase a FEED bag for $25 and get it personalized by local artists Jordan Thompson and Katiana Quinones from Fine Print Silkscreen of Miami at no additional cost.  The bag on sale at Whole Foods is the FEED 100 bag.  By purchasing the bag, 100 children will receive a nutritious meal in school through the United Nations World Food Program.  In addition, Jean Michele Daudier will be performing live world music, with a focus on French-Creole beats. Celebrating the Fourth of July in Aventura

4th of July

The Fourth of July, commonly known as Independence Day, is a holiday celebrating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  That is when the United States declared its independence from Great Britain.  The 4th of July is always associated with fireworks.

Aventura Events: Want To Help End Childhood Hunger?

Great American Bake Sale

CupcakesThe event, presented by Share Our Strength , will be Sunday, May 24, 2009, 12:00pm – 4:00pm at the Center Court of the Aventura Mall. The 5th Annual Great American Bake Sale is a benefit to help end childhood hunger.

The Rise of The Regionals – Filling The Funding Gap

dollar sign - tree - money grows on treesRecently during several speaking engagements I mentioned the niche that some small to mid-sized banks are filling in the residential mortgage market for Miami and South Florida.  The “distressed market” policies of some of the major lenders and larger banks including that of my employer are creating an environment where down payment requirements and/or underwriting guidelines are preventing some buyers from moving forward with their home purchase.  This is particularly true in the area of jumbo mortgages used for the purchase of a home with a sales price between $525,000 and $1,500,000.
