Going on now through October 30, 2009, bid on hand-painted pumpkins to benefit charity. The proceeds will go to Whole Planet Foundation, which raises awareness about the power of microcredit to help people lift themselves out of poverty.

The 14th Annual Founders Day will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2009 from 12:00pm – 5:00pm at Founders Park Bayside. Activities will include:

There’s No Place Like Home

Select Theaters Will Screen The Wizard of OZ
Tonight, South Florida theaters will be participating in a nationwide celebration of one of America’s most beloved films, The Wizard of Oz, which is turning 70 years old. The movie, directed by Victor Fleming, was based on a children’s book by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and was adapted for Broadway before finally ending up as on of America’s classic film fairy tales. This is the first theater re-release since 1949. Participating theaters include AMC Aventura, Sunset Place, Regal South Beach and the Falls. Enjoy the show!

Share Our Strength’s: Great American Dine Out

A National Dine Out To End Childhood Hunger – September 20 – 26, 2009
Thousands of restaurants across the country are helping to make sure no kid in America grows hungry. The funds raised from this campaign will support:
- increasing participation in school food and nutrition programs
- increasing the number of community gardens
- food banks and food pantries
- increasing access to fresh produce
- increasing utilization of federal child food and nutrition programs, e.g. food stamps, school breakfast, etc.
- advocacy around child food and nutrition-related programs
Everyone can join the Great American Dine Out in these ways:
- volunteer your skills – register restaurants and/or sponsors in your community
- dine out during the campaign period of September 20 – 26, 2009
- tell everyone you know – family, friends, employees, colleagues and associations – to eat out during the campaign period at participating Great American Dine Out restaurants
- make a personal, tax-deductible donation

Aventura: Strides For Safety

Strides For Safety 5k Green Run/Walk Charity Running Event
Proceeds from the Strides for Safety run will assist the University of Miami William Lehman Injury Research Center in its ongoing research to improve the treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries resulting from trauma.
The 3.1 mile run/walk starts and ends at the Aventura Mall and runs around the Turnberry Isle golf course.
When: Sunday, September 13, 2009
Where: Aventura Mall, 19501 Biscayne Bl, Aventura, FL 33180
The race starts behind Macy’s department store.
Registration: 5:30 am – 6:45 am
Awards Ceremony: 8:00 am
After the race, stop by the safety fair and kid’s fun zone for a variety of free health screenings and activities.

Can I Play Golf For Free?

Free Golf At The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club
Resort guests at The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club get FREE golf until September 30, 2009. Complimentary green fees for all resort guests, only cart fee per person will apply.
The entire resort recently underwent a $150 million transformation. World Golf Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd completely redesigned both on-property championship courses from tee to green. $45 million was devoted specifically to this project.
The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club was named one of the “World’s Best” in 2008 by Travel + Leisure magazine and received the Mobil Four Star Hotel & Mobil Four Star Spa Award, along with Meetings & Conventions Gold Key Award in 2007.

Aventura Arts & Cultural Center

Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Now Under Construction
Construction on the new Aventura Arts & Cultural Center began in January, 2009 and it is expected to open in early 2010. The 325 seat facility will provide a variety of performing arts and cultural programming. The Center will provide opportunities for residents to enjoy a variety of events within the community and expand drama and arts programming at Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES). The Center will be easily accessible and located at the east end of NE 188 Street. Steven D. Clark, the former Director of Operations for the Miami Beach Convention Center and the Jackie Gleason Theatre, has been hired as the General Manager. He began work in early August, 2009.
The City of Aventura has launched a new web site for the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. The new web site, www.aventuracenter.org, gives monthly updates of the project and new features will be added as opening day approaches. Visitors can view architectural renderings of the building, news releases, and monthly photos of the construction area. Traffic alerts and Advisory Board meeting information is also posted.
