Calling All Kids (And Their Parents) Ages 8 – 10!

Macys 5th Annual Spelling BeeMacy's 5th Annual Spelling Bee

When:  August 28, 2010 at 2:00pm

Where:  Aventura Mall

From August 7th to September 12th Macy’s will be holding spelling bees at select stores throughout the country.  The winner of each local spelling bee will receive a year of online learning from Kaplan Tutoring, a $150 Scholastic online gift card and a trip to New York City to compete in the finals at Macy’s Herald Square on Sunday, September 26, 2010.  The grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 Kaplan Tutoring Scholarship and a $500 Scholastic online gift card.

This event is hosted by Reading Is Fundamental (RIF).   RIF motivates children to read by working with them, their parents and community members to make reading a fun part of every day life.  Last year RIF provided 4.4 million children with 15 million new books and literary resources.  To learn more go to www.rif.org.

The City of Aventura is currently in the process of becoming a Green Local Government, as certified by the Florida Green Builders Coalition (FGBC).  The FGBC designates Green Cities and Counties for outstanding environmental planning.  The program focuses on improving environmental performance through:

  • water conservation
  • air quality improvements
  • other criteria

Becoming a Green City is an opportunity to improve environmental sustainability by:
